Computer Science

Craig Baker's research won 3rd place at the Consortium for Computing in Small Colleges conference in Providence, RI.

Computer science students learn methods and techniques of problem solving, develop a facility in the expression of problem solutions as computer algorithms and programs, and become acquainted with the major areas of current interest and importance in computer science.

The computer science minor is designed for all interested students, but it is particularly suited for students majoring in mathematics, any of the sciences, economics, psychology, sociology, various special areas such as digital imaging (in the art major), as well as for students in the Teacher Education Program.

Drop in at the mathematics and computer science wing in the Schaefer science building and notice the vibrant atmosphere. Here, students and faculty form a close and welcoming community. They revel in these "difficult" majors.

St. Mary's Project (SMP)

Computer science is more than understanding systems. What better way than to become an expert than with the help of a faculty mentor? SMP topics include:

  • Machine translation: a case study in Yoruba
  • Digital glimpse of rugby
  • Design of an intelligent “Go” player
  • Creating geospecific databases for real-time simulation

Travel Abroad

"Having studied abroad twice, once to India and once to Thailand, I cannot stress enough how important I feel that studying abroad is for every undergraduate student. For me the experience meant getting out of the classroom and discovering for myself what was going on in the rest of the world. The lessons I learned while abroad apply not only to my major, but to my entire life as I figure out what I want to do with my future and where I fit in globally. "
